Welcome October!

October 2026

Welcome, October!

A new month--and new, exciting opportunities for creators at the intersection of art and science!

As usual, this month we'll be sharing resources and events with you, which you might like to explore.

And let's start right off with what's happening next weekend.

Inspiring tomorrow's innovators

DISCOVERY Children's Museum, in Las Vegas, is celebrating an anniversary.

Next Sunday, October 11th, they're hosting their 5th annual "DISCOVERY Girls in STEM" event!

This free special event, sponsored by the Gene Haas Foundation and Google, is dedicated to inspiring elementary and middle school students to explore the possibilities of future careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

And while this is billed as a STEM event...

C'mon, it's also STEAM.

Arts-oriented students--even girls who don't yet see themselves in science or technology--are likely to be captivated by all the maker activities.

From 10 am till noon, three floors of hands-on STEM stations will be open.

Participants can design robots, explore storytelling through STEM with fairy tale STEM kits, make things light up with squishy circuits and much more.

A particular favorite of mine, Ozobot educational robots (tiny and cute coding robots with LOTS of personality!), will be on the third floor. Second-floor station activities include "Art in Motion", which sounds intriguing.

And who wouldn't enjoy flying a drone? Aerial Drone Piloting is listed as one of the activities on the second floor.

But according to the Museum's press release, much more is happening, for this fifth DISCOVERY Girls in STEM event.

Event check-in happens from 8:30 to 9 that morning, according to the museum's press release. (And anyone who checks in by 9, gets to "stay and play" in the afternoon, free!)

Live presentations, by women in STEM, begin at 9:10. Listed speakers are Dr. Kayla Kotake and Occupational Therapist Madisen Elizabeth Redar, from Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, and Community Engagement Manager Becky Hall, of the Nevada Mining Association.

At 10:15 the live STEM presentation, "Breathe In, Breathe Out" will explore the function of the lungs and ways to keep them healthy.

A second live presentation, "Action, Reaction!", at 11:15, will showcase the dazzling side of chemistry, with flames and color.

And from 10 am till noon, numerous community partners--including Women in Aviation, Mesquite STEAM Center, and Las Vegas-Clark County Library District will be offering free educational resources, hands-on STEM activities and take-home materials for families, from their booths.

While this is a free event, registration is required--and it's going to be popular, so sign up early! Here's the link to register.

Elementary and middle school-aged students and their families (that includes siblings, friends and caregivers) are welcome.

Not familiar yet with DISCOVERY Children's Museum? They're located at 360 Promenade Place, near the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, in Las Vegas.

And DISCOVERY Girls in STEM is one of many programs DISCOVERY Children’s Museum offers, as the top interactive Museum in Southern Nevada! Here's a link to their website, to check out their offerings as they celebrate 36 years--and counting--of serving young future engineers, artists and creators in the Las Vegas ares.

And, that's it for now!

See you next week!

October 2026 A Goodbye--and a Hello (Royalty-free image by Jan Vasek from Pixabay.) After weeks of speculation, the official news came out on Friday. ENGAGE XR's last day is Saturday, October 31st. Like many others who enjoyed multiple events in this innovative platform, I'm truly sorry things ended this way. However, one closure doesn't stop creativity. Academy of Immersive Arts and Sciences President Ben Erwin has a wonderful "PSA" post on LinkedIn, in which he offers guidance for backing...
